And if you were wondering, it’s named for Captain Richard Flaherty, the smallest man who ever served in the U.S. military. At 4’ 9” and 96 lbs., Flaherty had to get a congressional waiver to join the Army. But his stature isn’t why you’ll remember his name. Captain Flaherty earned a silver star, two bronze stars, and two purple hearts before becoming a Green Beret. He served as a Special Forces Operations Commander and later, a CIA operative.
